help please, Henry Andrew Hawkins
« on: Sunday 08 May 05 23:43 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wondered if anyone could help me find my Nans grandfather Henry Andrew Hawkins his son was called James Hawkins born dec 1870 and died dec 1948. I cannot find either of them on any census records. I do know that James went to sea at the age of 13 after his father died and also his mother of abroken heart or so she was told. Henry hawkins was an Engine Driver and James a Hall Porter. I am at real standstill with this one and wndered if anyone could help me at all.
Many thanks
Zoe

Hi Zoe

Do you have any idea where any events relating to these people took place?

Best wishes

Hi Zoe

I'm sure a number of us would like to try and help you with this one but it doesn't seem to be making much sense at the moment does it?  They must be there somewhere.

Can I ask what concrete evidence you have for James?  Do you have his marriage certificate?  Is that correct that he would have been 47 when he married?  Had he been married before?

Where did you hear of the Strood connection?  How did he get to be in Sheffield?  Goodness me, so many questions - sorry but just trying to think of a way to get some info ............. .

Best wishes

Casalguidi :)

Hi, Just realised there is a reply from ages ago. Sorry I should be good by now. I do have a marriage cert for James and that is where it says his fathers name and that he was deceased Engine driver. Before I had this though my Nan said James father died in a Train crash. He was a lot older than Rosa Twyman his wife when they married.
Any ideas would be amazing.
I really do not understand this at all.
Thanks
Zoe

Hi Zoe,

It would be a great help if you could put up a list of names, places, ages and dates that you know.  That will help us all search if there is a possible transcription error that is hiding the information you seek.  For instance, this is what I have from what you have wrote:

Henry Andrew Hawkins married Rosa Twyman before or about 1870
Henry and Rosa were from Strood, Kent
Henry and Rosa had a son, James Hawkins born Dec 1870.
Henry Andrew Hawkins died about 1883.  Occupation: Engine Driver.
James Hawkins worked on the sea (Hall Porter) after his fathers death
James moved to Sheffield in 1917 after marriage (Certificate obtained)

Questions:
Do you know Henry or Rosa's birth year or approx. age?
Do you know if they used other names?  Henry aka Harry?  Rosa aka Rosina?
Do you know if they were born in Strood Kent?
Do you know of any family connections - Parents or Siblings of Henry or Rosa?
Do you know where and when Henry died?
Was James an only child?
Where was James born?
How do you know James occupation?  Marriage Cert. or from your Nan?

If you could go over all the life evens and just fill in the Who, What, Where, When and How it would be of great assistance.

By the way, have you checked out the following census:

1881:  RG11/1247, Folio 59, Page 5 - Henry Andrew Hawkins age 44
1891:  RG12/951, Folio 100, Page 23 - Henry A Hawkins age 54

The information doesn't match what you have provided but it will help if you could rule this family out.

I hope this is of some assistance,
