George Thompson, Moira
« on: Sunday 13 November 11 21:18 GMT (UK) »
My grandfather's brother George was born 27 Feb 1869 in Moira and probably baptised
in Moira CoI Parish Church, a son of John Thompson and Mary ( Hawthorn ).

I am unable to find a marriage or death for George, although I believe that he had two sons, Noel and Jack/Jim
and that he died in a cycling accident, possibly in Lisburn.

I have checked the 1901 Ireland Census and Ancestry to no avail.

Can anyone help ?

There's a James Noel Thompson (birth registration Jan./Mar.1904 Belfast) in 1911 census with father born Co. Down but father's name is Robert  :(
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Duncairn/Antrim_Road/139270

There is, however, a Noel John Sinnamon Thompson, son of George Thompson born 1911 Co.Antrim (birth registration Jan./Mar.1912 Belfast)- mother's first name Martha.

Searching for Thompson born 1911 +/- also shows a James Jackson Thompson- just something to keep in mind- although mother not named Martha.

A George Thompson married 1910 Co.Antrim to a Martha Ellen ? .
This couple in 1911 census-

Thank you aghadowey and BallyaltikilliganG for your replies.

I have looked at the Ros Davies website but the dates do not fit.

I think that the Noel John Sinnamon Thompson, son of George and Martha, is the correct family
member as I have now found that he died in Surrey in 2004 which fits in with my records.

It would seem that my George was living in Belfast at the time of Noel's birth rather than Moira.

Unfortunately the online civil registration index only goes up to 1921 for Northern Ireland counties.

LeslIe, did you see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/ under churches

Records available are some from 1725 then baptisms 1784- 1860, marriages 1784- 1845, burials 1784- 1856, graveyard nearby, PRONI has some records after 1830; gravestone inscriptions UHF Vol 18, oldest stone 1742; email me Ros Davies for a gravestone look-up
Some of these records might have been copied for Family search databases
see familysearch.com good luck onwards, JimG

Thank you for that information.

Although I had looked at Ros Davies' website I had not noticed that some records
were available for St. John's Church. Perhaps she is regularly updating her information.

This could be most helpful.

following on aghadowey's helpful points i looked and found

In the 1901 census, a Martha Ellen Sinnamon b Co Down aged 22, is working as a housemaid for the Paul family in house ref 23 in Edenderry (Portadown Urban, Armagh) is this the right person? I could throw no light on the Sinnamons except noting that Ros Davies website combines her entries for Cinnamon etc with Sinnamon
In the Ulster Historical Foundations website [which has a free index before requesting detail and therafter membership or buying creditd etc ] www.ancestryireland.com/quis  there is an entry for a Sinnamon marriage
SINNAMON   MARTHA ELLEN   1910   THOMAS   Antrim
Also under Thompson marriages  are
THOMPSON   THOMAS   1910   THOMAS   Antrim
THOMPSON   THOMAS   1910   JAMES   Antrim
THOMPSON   THOMAS   1910   WILLIAM   Down
THOMPSON   THOMAS GEORGE   1910   JOHN   Down
THOMPSON   THOMAS JAMES   1910   ANDREW   Antrim
www.emeraldancestors.com/search/marriages have two similar entries for George Thompson marriages which is curious. Eg a typo or ?
1910   George THOMPSON marries Martha Ellen XXXXXXXX Belfast
But just one for 1910   George XXXXXXX marries Martha Ellen SINNAMON Belfast   Antrim
Lennon wylie.co.uk website for the 1910 street directory doesn’t list a George Thompson or Thomson as a cafe manager, it does list about 10 George Thompsons I tried familysearch.org and got bogged down and couldnt finish it.
I don’t think I can offer anything ele, good luck, Jim
