Help to name company
« on: Monday 14 November 11 15:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi
This is a document I have come across which belonged to my great grandfather.  The photo isn't great quality I'm afraid, but if anyone could shed a light on which company he worked for that would be great.

thank you

Hi genjen
Thanks for that....I have absolutely no idea, the stamp for the company name is so poor, my best guess is BOWRU-S.  My grandfather was born, lived & died in Scotland, I was told many years ago that he was in Merchant Navy but at the time I didn't take notice of this information, how I wish I could turn back time :(

Hi

It looks as if there's something else but now I think it may be BOWRING & COMPANY printed in full.

Thank you for the other two replies.  I have a mystery middle name for a ggg grandmother whose family could well be involved in such companies in the area.

Also must look at the Merchant Seamen again.

Thank you all.

Best wishes

I really ought to check those Merchant Navy Records as well. I have lots of them in my family.

I also think it is Bowring and Company, written in full.

There are a couple of books on the Bowring company, one published in 1935 (or 38), called Benjamin Bowring & His Descendants, by Arthur C Wardle.  This one has a lot of info about the company, including a list of all their ships, and all the Captains who sailed them.  I know it is in the SoG in London, and I'm quite sure it is various other libraries throughout the world.

The other is called The Bowring Story, by David Keir, published in 1963.  I haven't seen this one, but have it on order.

This was a Port of New York Id card of its time, if anyone is interested here is a zoomable / better quality copy for a Canadian sailor Shackleton and a paragraph explaining the use of such cards:
