Looking for history of house.
« on: Wednesday 16 November 11 13:37 GMT (UK) »
I've got the Will of an ancestor who died 1897  but there's no date when the Will was written only the probate date. He does refer to leaving his wife all his property but she'd died in 1885 so it's obviously been written before this date. The odd thing is the Will states the house and shop are on Main Street yet she died in King Street 1885 and he died on Queen Street 1897. I know Queen Street was changed to Main Street but was there an intermittent period when it was known by both names? Also when was it changed from King Street to Queen Street?

He owned a house and shop on Main Street, Filey and also a house on Church Street but there's no house number given. How could I find which house it was?

Assume you are referring to Filey, Yorkshire?

In census returns from 1861 to 1891 there are both King Street and Queen Street in Filey.
Queen Street appears again in 1901 and 1911.

BUT, there is no mention of a Main Street in any of the census returns.

That's really strange because the Will definitely says Main Street. I wonder if Queen Street was also known as (the) Main Street of the town?

I'll see if I can find the man he names as renting the house to on the 1881 census.

There are 21 "Main Street"s in East Riding in 1891 - just not one in Filey!

His name was Robert Chew a Butcher and his father was Robert Chew a Blacksmith.

I have him living Queen/King Street/Main Street on all the censuses.

Yes that's him. I'd love to find an old photo of the street.

I've just been looking at the 1881 census and I can't believe I've found a place called Chew's Yard on the corner of Church Street. Looking at an old map of Filey it's in the same place as the Smithy so it must have belonged to his father the blacksmith.

There's a house in Chew's Yard which is occupied by a woman who's a lodging house keeper and a lodger who's a schoolmistress.

Nothing on him in the papers , but  on July 11, 1894; there is a bankruptcy notice on Robert Chew , Star Inn, Cayton, butcher and innkeeper.
I checked him in 1891 and he was born Filey.

Sorry I can`t help,
