I've had three replies from fourteen requests this year.

How does one check if the message sent has been opened please?

Go into Messages from the top menu on the Home page.  Then look in your Sent Messages folder.  If the message has been opened then the "envelope" will be open, or if not opened then it will show as a purple envelope.

I don't belong and never use GR, but I do have a subscription to Ancestry and of course I am a regular on here.

I have left instructions with my loved ones to post something on both sites if anything ever happens to me. Also my FB page.

I'd hate it if anyone thought I was a snob because I couldn't answer a PM.

I even answer the stupid ones and I'm always polite.

Thanks for that BumbleB!

Justed looked and two of the eleven non-replies have been opened!

One can but try but it does make you wonder if it's worth the effort! The odd good reply does make it worth-while of course!

I don't know if it's still the case but I discovered that people can appear on GR who have been placed on FriendsReunited.  I replied, very excitedly, to my own daughter  ;D ;D because she had entered family members onto her FR account - as I hit the "send" button I realised who I was sending a message to  :-[ :-[

Ditto, I sent a message to my husband who in with F R, was so excited to get a hot match ! Duh ::)

Also haven't recieved many replies to my requests the most annoying one being that I feature on someones tree, they have my birth year and district on there and they don't/won't reply to the four polite messages i've sent !

I've had a few messages from people on GR.  With the ones that do have matches with my ancestors we tend to start contacting each other my e-mail as it's much easier to send photos, attachments etc.  I've recently been in touch with someone who has solved a problem as to who some young children were who were living with my g.grandparents, and in a roundabout way I solved the problem of who the old lady was, who was living with his ancestors 20 years later.

KKSDelver - yes you do have to be a paid up member to post and receive messages but I don't think you'd be able to load your tree if you weren't. Unless of course it's because they were on FR, in which case what's the point of it all?  ???

Did he reply OFG?  :D

Some rude chap put me on his tree on GR and despite me sending some very pointed messages he didn't reply or remove me. I then wrote to GR and they saw to it that I was removed. How dare people put us on without our permission?!!

... yes you do have to be a paid up member to post and receive messages ...

I am not (nor ever have been) a paid-up member of GR.

I can create a GR tree online — don't know if I can up/download a Gedcom, I've never tried.

A paid-up member can send me a message, which I can reply to.  I can't initiate a contact, I have to wait for someone to contact me.

Even if someone gives me access to their tree, I can't view it without paying for a subscription.
