MOODY in Tasmania
« on: Wednesday 16 November 11 20:37 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I am the great-great granddaughter of James Moody (1836 -1924 ) and his second wife Elizabeth Jones.  Their youngest child Amy Louisa Moody (birth registered as "Annie") is my great-grandmother. On Amy's marriage certificate it lists her birthplace as Sandfly Tasmania and parents as James Moody, farmer, and Elizabeth Johns rather than Jones.  Could just be a typo?

It seems that no one has really worked out Elizabeth's family background (to my knowledge).  I have looked at the birth records on Ancestry.com, but unless her age is wrong??? She died 30 January 1918 aged 68 years. Reputed birthplace is Hobart. No parents names given. I don't have the marriage record.  Her name is indexed as "Jones", meant to be 22 years old (from memory) on 4 May 1871. No indication of her having a middle name.

I am just wondering if any other descendants have any marriage or death records for any of the family that would indicate definitely Jones, or any other clue? There are seven other children of the marriage.

I have lots of information about the Moody's.

Thanks,
N

looking at the tas archives site, there is an Elizabeth Jones born 1848 Hobart to parents John and Ellen, with siblings John, Esther, Julia, Sarah, William Henry, Jane, and John William - could this be your Elizabeth??

if I get a chance tomorrow to go to the library, I will have a look at that 1871 marriage- might be some clues eg witnesses
regards

Many thanks for replies. Maria Moody wrote many memoriams to her parents on the anniversaries of their deaths. I 've seen these on Trove digitalised newspapers. Hopefully someone on the Kemp side knows some more as she seemed particularly devoted to her parents.
I will have to look at the birth suggestion tomorrow.
I read a suggestion that Elizabeth was perhaps the child of the convict Maria Jones, however, that child born in 1851 in Hobart with father unknown seems to have died in 1853 re: Australian Birth and Death Index on Ancestry.com.

Many thanks for the lookup :) As I can't find a birth indexed for 1849 for Elizabeth, this is the closest:

Elizabeth Jones
Birth date: 14 April 1848
Father: John Jones
Mother: Elizabeth Jones
Hobart, Tasmania

So no idea if this is true as I assume the marriage certificate is not even going to indicate her father's name, which makes it pretty near impossible to know for sure.

James Moody and Elizabeth Jones children are :

Elizabeth Moody
b. 13 Nov 1871
Hobart Tasmania
James Moody
Elizabeth "Smith"

Thomas Henry Moody
b.13 Sep 1873
Hobart, Tasmania
"Henry" Moody
Elizabeth Jones

Maria Moody
6 Aug 1875
Hobart Tasmania
James Moody
Elizabeth Jones

Sarah Moody
16 Sep 1878
Kingston, Tasmania
James Moody
Elizabeth "Smith"

John Moody (John James Moody)
10 Oct 1880
Kingston, Tasmania
James Moody
Elizabeth Jones

Virginia Moody
8 Sep 1882
Kingston, Tasmania
James Moody
Elizabeth "Smith"

Mary Ann Moody
1 Sep 1884
Kingston,Tasmania
James Moody
Elizabeth Jones

Annie Louisa Moody (Amy Louisa Moody)
4 Jan 1888
Kingston, Tasmania
James Moody
Elizabeth Jones

Confused about the Smith and Jones now!!!

James Moody had a daughter also called Elizabeth in 1868 with his first wife Matilda Moore. She had been married previously to a Matthew Moor and maiden name was Matilda Ray, and yet:

Elizabeth Maria Moody (died 1909)
5 July 1868
Hobart, Tasmania
James Moody
Matilda "Downes"

Confusion all round ???

Hi johngirl,
I am currently attempting to determine a build date for an old Cottage recently purchased in Tasmania.

The land was originally owned by William Henry Kemp (W.H.Kemp) back in the late 1920's.

Appreciate any guidance you could provide.

William Henry Kemp was the husband of my grand-great aunt  Maria Louisa Moody.  He was born in 1870.  His obituary states that this was at Bagdad, birth is registered in Brighton.  It also states that he moved to **** and was an orchardist there for some 50 years before he died in 1962.  I believe the property was known as Hillview.

Have you tried the Lands Titles Office in Tasmania?

https://nre.tas.gov.au/land-tasmania/land-titles-office

William and Maria did not have any children, but raised a nephew as their son.
