Thomas Stubley of Egleton
« on: Friday 18 November 11 12:49 GMT (UK) »
On 6th April 1749 in Barholm, a marriage took place between a Thomas Stubley and an Eleanor Stubley.

I had originally guessed this Thomas may have originated in Lincolnshire, but the marriage record gives him as being from Egleton in Rutland.

I have only limited access to the Rutland parish records and wondered if someone might be able to tell me anything about Thomas, please?

Are there any records of members of the Stubley family in Egleton, or the nearby area?

Hello John,

No Thomas in Egleton. Maybe he was born elsewhere and the family moved to Egleton whilst he was a child. I often find this stumbling block myself. As Stubley is a fairly rare name, it will be worth you having what I have in all my Rutland villages. They might be relatives.

Thanks Doran54, for the information you provide, but my philosophy is to always try and satisfy myself that the previous research has been completed correctly.

This particular Thomas Stubley who you have found is a big problem for me, because as you say he married Mary Gill on 26 Apr 1747, but according to my reading of the Swineshead records, he was calling himself Thomas Stubbleday at that time, and the daughter Mary was also christened as Stubbleday.

Not only that, but although Mary Stubley (nee Gill) did die very young she was not buried until 6 June 1750, and I find it most unlikely that Thomas married Eleanor a whole year before his first wife died, especially after she had just given birth to their first daughter.

This is why the Thomas from Egleton who married Eleanor is so important, as he may provide a clue to which branch of the Stubley ancestry he is from.

Hopefully, someone with more knowledge of Rutland history may be able to shed some light at some point in the future.

Wow, thanks very much for all those entries Laura. There are a number of names that I recognise straight away, so should be able to make some progress.

I see there are a couple of Egleton entries, which suggests a Stubley family was living there c1750 if only for a year or two and would fit with the 1749 marriage in Barholm.

I will hibernate with my laptop, and see if I can come up with the 'eureka' moment, and will let you know.

Thanks once again,

Jon Stubley

I agree, although I am now worried that I may have misread the death of Mary the wife, for Mary the daughter.

(Edited to say I did not misread it, phew!)

Thanks for taking the time to look up this information for me. I may have to have a second look at Swineshead parish records (sorry everyone that this is a bit  O/T for Rutland).

Jon

The 8th August 1761 marriage of Thomas Stubley to Hannah Corby is very interesting, as I have this marriage on that date but taking place in Great Hale Lincolnshire.

Curiouser and curiouser

One year on, and I am progressing very slowly. I discovered a burial of an Eleanor Stubley (w/o Thomas) in Uffington, Lincs (which is about 1/2 mile from Rutland county boundary) on 28th Dec 1760.

This would have left Thomas on his own with five children aged under 10 years old. My theory is that it is this Thomas who re-married in Aug 1761 at Empingham, Rutland to Hannah Corby.
