John Evan John Foulk of Benrhos ifsa, Llanfachreth 1758
« on: Saturday 19 November 11 00:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi - I would like some help with the Welsh naming system for longer names.

I have a burial record for John Evan John Foulk of Benrhos ifsa, Llanfachreth 1758.

The farm name is common in my family tree and the oldest descendant I can trace is Morris John Evan (Morris Jones) of the same farm name (born 1730).

Based on the Welsh naming system I think it is correct to read that Morris is son of John Evan.

Could this have been a cut down version of John Evan John Foulk?

Is it correct to this name as John Son of Evan Son of John Son of Foulk?

Finally - is there a meaning for Foulk as it does not look common.

thanks in advance for any insights.

You may have seen this already but there is a copy of the bond following the death of Morris Jones of Benrhos Isa in 1811

Choose 'Township' as the search criteria and enter 'Benrhos'

There are some derivations of the surname Foulk and variations on:-

Thanks David - yes I've seen the bond.  I was lucky to find several Wills/Bonds relating to the family.

Is my reading of the Welsh naming hierarchy correct?

Thanks Nigel.

I am not absolutely certain but I would go along with what you suggest - i.e. Morris being the son of John Evan who had the additional lineage of John son of Foulk.
It could be that a burial/grave would have more information than that in daily use and so John would normally only add his father's first name.
