This could be Matthew's 1st marriage in the Northants Marriage Indexes.

Peakirk P.C. By License

05 Aug 1810
Matthew BAINS otp & Mary JOHNSON of Borough Fen

Which could mean if Catherine is as you say his wife in 1851
(as noted on the Census) then you are looking for a 3rd marriage.

Looking at the 1841 Census for Thorney with it showing
a Jane Baines aged 40 also in the Workhouse maybe Matthew
had deserted her and the children.

Or he could not find work and put them there until his
circumstances changed. In the mean-time it seems that
Jane died.  :)

Catherine came from Devises, Wilts on the 1851 so maybe
Matthew moved away for a while.

Hi Heywood and Sandy

Thank you so much for all your help. It does appear that all the information you found is indeed my Matthew Baines and family. Now I just need to get copies of the death cert's to help verify the data for Matthew and Jane.

Again, thank you so much, I really appreciate all your help.

Have a great week,

Leanne
