Captured in Jerusalem 1917
« on: Sunday 20 November 11 10:46 GMT (UK) »
Sgt Thomas Doggrell of the 1/1 Dorset Yeomanry (Queens Own) was wounded and captured fighting the Turks near Jerusalem on November 21st 1917.  He died in captivity in Turkey on January 13th 1918.

How can I find out where in Turkey he died and how the British Army were informed of his death?

Many thanks

LC

Hi,

His death is listed in GRO War Deaths Army Other Ranks (1914-1921)

Thomas Doggrell, Dorsetshire Yeomanry, Sgt 230084,  1918.  Volume C2, page 153.

Not sure how much information the certificate will show.

Mack,

A card produced by his family at his memorial service reads, "died whilst a prisoner of war in Turkey, of wounds received in action on Nov. 21st 1917."

The service was not held until May 26th; date of death is not recorded on the card which may mean that his family were not aware of the exact date at that time.

Also, on his death certificate it says, "place of death, Turkey whilst P of W. Died of wounds and sickness".

if sgt doggrell had died in turkey,he would be buried or commemorated in baghdad war cemetery along with all the other POWs who died in turkey itself,[not its empire]

There is a website "MEN FROM SEMLEY WHO DIED IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR" with good information about Thomas (two sections). Unfortunately no information about him being a POW.
