MISSING PERSON
« on: Monday 09 May 05 15:50 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for Henry SA(U)NDERS, born 1838 at Hutton, Dumfriesshire on the 1851 Census. He would only have been 13 years old at the time - but he isn't listed on the Hutton parish census as living with his parents. I have searched the http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/historicalindexes/census.aspx for him, but he's not listed.
He was on the 1841 census, living with his parents and again I found him on the 1881 census living at Hutton parish - this time he was a widow. Searching the 1871 census shows him as still living in Hutton parish with his sister and 2 young children. Poor soul - his wife died young as he was a widow then.
WHERE ON EARTH WAS HE AT THE TIME OF THE 1851 CENSUS?
The 1871 & 1881 census returns confirm that he was born at Hutton.

I hope somebody out there can pass on any suggestions of where to look at next.

Not sure if you seen this entry for 1851

Name: SAUNDERS , Henry
Address: Sibbaldbie Village(813A):
Parish: Applegarth
Relationship: son of William Saunders
Marital Status:
Occupation: SCHOLAR
Age: 13
Born: born Applegarth Dms
Household No: 2/45

as you see Henry here was born Applegarth which is right next to Hutton. The Henry here's parents were William & Margaret.
Is this any help?

Amanda,

Thanks for looking for me, but this isn't the one. My Henry Sanders parents were called Archibald & Elizabeth. When I saw this entry I thought it was the right one - the age tallies, until I saw the names of the parents. It gets so confusing sometimes as there are so many Sanders in the area with the same christian names.

This may not help but I had a similar problem with a missing family (and had used all the variant spellings I could think of). I eventually found them by pure fluke - their name had been mistranscribed. When I saw the original document I could see why.

You could try Launders/Landers.

Just a thought. Good luck anyway.
