Shipping Departures
« on: Monday 21 November 11 10:14 GMT (UK) »
Is there any way of finding Shipping Departures from Melbourne (or Sydney) for the years 1946 to 1948.

Perhaps an on-line passenger manifest.

In particular I'm looking for the ship that went to England with Graeme Bell, Jazz musician on board.  When I find that I will know the ship that took my parents to England.

Clarence, England then Australia from 1912.
Copeland, England.
Lascelles / Lovett / Stevens, England.
Langford, England (Reading and Southampton).
Kipp / Rigbye / Randall, Germany then Victoria, Australia from 1849.
Boothman / Clifford / Marsden / Johnston in Australia

Not a direct answer, but may help if everything fails?

Graeme Bell is profiled on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graeme_Bell and mentions him going to England 1947 and 1948, but no ship named. However, it also mentions his autobiography, and if you get a copy of that book it may mentioned the ship?

He might have a Fan Club somewhere that might be in contact with him? I did have a very quick look at Google for a Fan club without success. You may have better luck?

Just checked newspapers of the day, which mentioned Graeme Bell leaving Australia in July 1947, and returning August 1948. Annoying part, they mention the ship he returned on,  "Orion", but not the one he left on  >:(

Many thanks Les and Cando, Wow that was quick, now to find if Mr Eric & Mrs Ethel Langford (both not living) were on board.

Is there a link to find the passenger list On-line?? As they made friends on board and need to read the list to jog our memories.   ;)

Yes they are both on board but the passengers are listed by sex so not together on the manifest.  Eric LANGFORD, 23 years, butcher and Ethel LANGFORD 22 Housewife.  Address in UK 72, Carnation Road, Basnett, Southampton.  Country of last permanent residence Australia.  Country of intended permanent residence, England.

Cheers

Hi

Looking at the passenger lists it looks like Ethel travelled in 'A' class and Eric travelled  in 'C' Class which explained why they weren't on the same page. What puzzled me was that the names immediately before and after Ethel on the manifest were male.

The passenger manifests are on Ancestry if you want to see who else was onboard
