Jamieson, as you can see from everyone's comments, there are often many more routes for research than just the standard resources. Hopefully, some ideas here that will work for you going forward.

Genealogy research does cost money (no doubt about it) but sometimes with an understanding of what else is available in terms of resources and information, you can get to make some headway  :)

Thanks very much for all your replies. I have been looking at joining Aberdeen and North East Family History Society, only £20 per year. That's a good investment

ANESFHS also has access to A******y.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Just back from ANESFHS on King St. Paid up member now. In the place only 5 minutes and already finding out stuff.
