Chapels in Bontuchel and Rhyd-y-Cilgwyn
« on: Tuesday 22 November 11 17:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Would anyone be able to help me with information about the Chapels in Bontuchel and Rhyd-y-Cilgwyn??

I've previously posted a question (a while ago!) http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,283455.0.html about my Jones and Roberts relations, and finally managed to get over to the Ruthin Records Office a couple of weeks ago.  I found a few marriages in the Parish Records (via info from North Wales BMD), but apart from that didn't have a great deal of success.

Someone suggested that I should send for a few marriage certs to find which chapels/churches were used by the families (why didn't I think of that before??!!) which I did - only to find that they took place in Bontuchel Chapel and Rhyd-y-Cilgwyn Chapel in Rhewl (both Calvinistic Methodist).

I've now found that Ruthin Records Office only has a few early baptism records for Bontuchel and nothing for the Chapel in Rhyd-y-Cilgwyn, which is possibly still open.  I've tried to find how to contact them on Google but without any luck.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I may find out if any records for these chapels are accessible?

Thanks,

Janet

Hi,

Yes, this is my family too!  Most of Edward and Ann's children were born in Liverpool (including my gt grandfather, also Edward) and I've been lucky enough to find a fair number of their BMD's in various parish records in Liverpool.

I would now like to try and get further back, and have been able to (hopefully!) identify marriages for some of Edward seniors siblings and nieces and nephews.  I know I could go ahead and send for lots of marriage certs, but was rather hoping that if I could find where/if there are any parish records available, I could save some money ;).

With regard to the birth/baptism and death/burial records, again I was hoping that trawling through parish records would be easier (and cheaper) than having to send for certificates, i.e. for John Jones or John Roberts!

In the main, the families seem to have listed Gyffylliog/Lllanynys/Bontuchel/Ruthin as their birth places, but I now realise after visiting Ruthin, that this isn't going to be an easy task ::)

The Chapel you refer to as Rhyd y Cilgwyn is now know as Rhewl Chapel. The name was changed from Rhyd y Cilgwyn to Rhewl in the 1920's or 30's

Rhyd-y-Cilgwyn is still open. It was the chapel of the famous minister Emrys ap Iwan, who is buried in the cemetery there. I go to this chapel.
I have an old book in Welsh about the history of the chapels in that area. Let me know what you want.

Hi Trebrys,

Thanks for your reply.  I'm trying to find records relating to my Jones and Roberts relations from the 1840's onwards in the Ruthin area (no small task there!! :D)

As I now know that at least two of them were married at Rhyd-y-Cilgwyn, I'm hoping that others used the chapel too.

If you were able to find out where any BMD records for the chapel may be kept, and if it's possible to look through them, that would be brilliant.

Had trouble getting this on here as the original was too large--is this the chapel?

It is indeed.....built in 1840. Has cinema style seats inside which is quite unusual.
