Death Notice
« on: Friday 25 November 11 16:23 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help with looking up  a death notice in newspapers on the Isle of Man.
My Great Uncle, Alexander MacGregor, died on 19th April 1956 at Mannin Infirmary, Braddan
He was born on 30th April 1875 in Mortlach, Dufftown, Banffshire.  His parents were Alexander McGregor and Jean or Jane McDonald.  I don't know when he moved to the Isle of Man but it must have been after 1903 as his last son was born then in Lancashire.

Hoping someone can help.

Regards

Evelyn

not sure what info you expect in the death notice - buried 23 Apr 1956 at Braddan  - Mannin infirmary was the old Braddan poor asylum openned 1891 and run in association with Ballamona (old lunatic asylum)
some IoM newspapers IOM Times inc) are online as part of the Britiah Library newspapers scheme (access via larger public libraries) - other IoM papers online only at iMuseum Douglas but probably more generally April 2012

Thought it might show his parents or wife's name on the death notice.
I'm tring to find out if re-married on the Isle of Man.

there is a funny - age given as 60 in the index at www.iomfhs.im - macgregor very unusual on Island - only 2 an Ethel who predeceased or a Margret - basically you only landed up at infirmary if you had nowhere else to go - place demolished 20+ years ago

Dear Voirrey

I did check wwith IOM library and they said that there was no headstone but I thought there might be something in the local paper mentioning him,

Tazzy    I looked  at  original   Kirk   Braddan   Burials   Register   Today in  library.

no    184 /   age    EIGHTY  /  address   given   as   12   Belgravia   Road   ,  Onchan [   a   village  on edge  of   Douglas.]

I imagine  this  means  some  family  member  or friend   was involved  in funeral   ----   otherwise   address  would  have  been  the

Infirmary.  Have   you  thought  of  buying   death   cert. from   General  Registry??  £7.00  I think  for   handwritten  copy??

I have his death certificate but unfortunately, it doesn't give any information.  Registered by a member of staff at the hospital
