« on: Saturday 26 November 11 11:36 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

My husbands grt.grt, grt grandfather James Valentine is recorded on two of his childrens baptism OPR as being a Sergeant Major in the Kincardineshire Militia, this is in 1808 & 1810.. I have tried but have been unable to find any info on these soldiers.

Prior to this James was a linen manufacturer in Stonehaven

Any help much appreciated

Hi Patricia,
Have a look at www.anesfhs.org.uk. (Don't know why this isn't a live link). On the welcome page under news there is ref to a talk by Pete Wadley. He covers Militia Records. Have you tried the Gordon Highlander's Museum?

Jim.

Hi Patricia,
Just realised the link went live when I posted it. We live and learn.

 :) Hi JCee,

Thanks for that I have looked at the link, it looks helpful so I will have a closer look tonight.... more time... My husband and I visited the Gordon Highlanders Museum, I believe in Stirling Castle... is that the right one?... it was interesting but as my husband isn't over keen on his families history - unlike me - we only viewed as tourists do....   :o

Thanks for your help
Patricia

ps Stirling Castle was beautiful, I much preferred it to Edinburgh.....

Hi Patricia,
Wrong place. If you were in Stirling Castle you were at The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders  Museum. The Gordons are in Aberdeen. The Gordons Regimental area is Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Banffshire and Kincardineshire.

Regards,

Jim.
