Another Roberts from Chirk
« on: Sunday 27 November 11 19:34 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any information on a direct ancestor Robert Roberts born circa 1790. I believe he married Elizabeth Lloyd  20/8/1825 at Chirk and they had children Mary c1826 born Chirk, Edward c1833 Chirk, and Robert c1836 Chirk.
Mary married Richard Northall in June 1849 at Chirk and her brother is living with them at Chirk Green in the 1851 census.

Hi Andy  :)

I'll have a look in the Chirk parish records later this evening.

I don't think they're related to mine but they all lived in Chirk Green at some stage.

Hi

I can confirm the marriage to Elizabeth Lloyd. Witnesses - John Evans and Mary Lloyd.

Possible  baptism ~

27 Sept 1789 (born 5 Sept) Robert Roberts s/o Robert and Sarah. Abode - Penyclawdd (this is the Pentre/Whitehurst. etc. area of Chirk parish)

I'll see what I can find on this couple.

Thanks for such a quick response. The date of 1790 for his birth is a guess and could be as late as 1805 as I have never been able to identify him in any census.

So you're only guessing that he was born Chirk then.  The marriage entry that he was 'of the parish' just means that he'd lived there for at least 3 weeks.

I have a possible baptism for Robert, jnr

27 March 1836 Robert Roberts s/o Robert (labourer in coal) and Elizabeth. Abode Chirk (this usually means the village itself rather than one of the townships)

I don't see the others. Can you tell me your sources as that might help me follow them backwards.

Sources are IGI, Census back to 1841 Freebmd etc I don't have access to parish registers. I have the marrige cert for Mary Roberts and Richard Northall in 1841 which gives Mary Roberts father as Robert Roberts.
From the IGI one possible birth for Robert Roberts was 14/4/1798 at Chirk father Job mother Ann Jones. The difficulty is tying them together with any degree of certainty.

Hi Andy

I suspect that the IGI entries are all submitted and so have to be checked against the parish registers which I have.  The Chirk  parish records were not put up on the IGI as the diocese wouldn't allow the LDS to have access to them initially, so the IGI is not reliable for Chirk.

I'll check for later baptisms but you did initally say circa 1790.

Robert Roberts born circa 1790

does it say whether Robert was dead on Mary's marriage cert?

Just looked at the 1798 record - it is a submitted record.

There is an entry for him in the parish registers - Abode Nant which is between Whitehurst and Fron.  However, I feel that this is all clutching at straws. This Robert is no more likely than the one that I found in 1789.

We don't even know that he was born in Chirk. At that time there was a lot of movement into the area - canal building and coal mining, etc.

I see that the three children are on their own in Chirk in 1841:

Chirk village, HO107/1399/2/17/8
Mary Roberts, 14
Edward, 8
Robt,
All b. County

Nothing to go on,really

I'll check burials.
