I am looking for someone born on the Island of Saint Helena, who is nowhere to be found after 1851

Have you looked in St. Helen's, Lancs.?  It sounds suitably distant from Saint Helena to be possible!

Jill

Hi Galaxy

St Helenas, Ireland proved to be St Helena Island in 1861!

Paul,
Thanks so much for the link to your thread, it was a most interesting read.Island of Saint Helena would make more sense for my ancestor's birthplace, as opposed to Ireland, as her daughter was definitely born out there in the South Atlantic, in 1825 However, the actual census image looks like Ireland, too.
Maybe a deaf enumerator or a noisy train running by at the time?

don't forget to check for incomplete trancriptions. Do a check for the first 2 or 3 letters of the surname. I found my GGGrandfather Earley who was transcribed as Ea*
I had been looking for weeks

Ancestry only lets me put a min of 3 letters before a wild card - is there some way round this?

Hi

Like Hoppity, I too am having trouble with 1861. No less than 3 families are missing from Ashwellthorpe in Norfolk and are in fact consist of 3 generations of the Gooch family.

Did the village get left out of the 1861 census or are the records just too bad to be transcribed. Does any one know or have any ideas on this?
