Boden, Acton, Gibbons and Pountney of Broseley, late 1700's
« on: Tuesday 29 November 11 02:15 GMT (UK) »
In the dark and surrounded by four brick walls and a ceiling concerning the the families Boden, Acton, Gibbons and Pountney in the late 1700's.  Tried all sorts of marriage and birth combinations to fit these names and relationships but without further data concerning the "UNKNOWNs" any certainty is a distant hope.  Any comment/data would be much appreciated.

(1) siblings
John Pountney ACTOR (IGI transcript error) Christening  28 MAY 1780   Saint Leonard, Broseley, Shropshire
Elisabeth Pountney ACTON Christening  24 AUG 1784  Saint Leonard, Broseley, Shropshire
Parents John ACTON/Ann  (UNKNOWN - possibly Pountney see below) marriage place/date unknown.

(2) Eliz. Pountney GIBBONS Christening 24 JUN 1796 Saint Leonard, Broseley, Shropshire
parents James GIBBONS/ Mary Ann BODEN (marr place/date unknown)

(3) Samuel Pountney SMITH Christening  27 DEC 1812 Munslow, Shropshire
(parent's Edward Smith/ Emma (UNKNOWN) marr place/date unknown)

(4) James Gibbons BODEN / Mary Ann ACTON marr. 14/8/1793 Saint Leonard, Broseley
children, about 5, of which :-
Benjn. Pountney BODEN Christening 17 MAR 1805 Saint Leonard, Broseley
Jesse Pountney BODEN birth 1/3/1815 Christening 3/4/1815 Wesleyan Methodist, Broseley/Madeley Wood, Shropshire, England   -  the bureaucrats have him thrice christened or recorded, including on 4/4/1822 in St Michael's Paternoster Royal, London! ( RG4 1814,  RG 1815, RG5 171-2).

(5) John Aston BODEN  b 10/8/1794 Broseley. Parents James BODEN and Mary Ann GIBBONS.
He is likely be the same person as John Acton Boden (b about 1794, Salop (ex 1851 census) parents James & Mary Ann,  twice married and whose descendents are fairly well known to me. They include  Acton & Gibbons as patronymics also Jesse, Eliza, Emma, Margaret, Mary, Ann, Benjamin, John and James - all between 1820 and 1860).

ALSO

Lease and Release of Property in Dudley Street, Wolverhampton

Description: Lease dated 16th September 1794, between:
    1. Ann Acton of Broseley, Salop, Widow (late Ann Pountney, Spinster, grand-daughter and devisee in tail of the Will of John Pountney of Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, Butcher, deceased); James Gibbons Boden of Broseley, Mercer, and Mary Ann his wife (late Mary Ann Acton, Spinster, only child and heir apparent of Ann Acton and Benjamin Pountney of Wolverhampton, Gentleman).
    2. William Clarke the younger of Wolverhampton, White Tawer.
Consideration: 5s paid by #2 to #1. #1 leased to #2 a warehouse in Dudley Street, Wolverhampton, ...... etc

Mary Ann Acton "spinster, only child of Ann Acton & Benjamin Pountney of Wolverhampton" -  why is she ACTON  rather than POUNTNEY?

Who are the parents of  "Ann Acton of Broseley, Salop, Widow (late Ann Pountney...)"?

Cheers

Greetings. There is a lot via google on sam .pountney smith, (wiki of his life as architect, and his works, as in british-history.ac.uk, and he lives  at "the Limes", Coleham,Shrewsbury in 1851.)  I believe his father was Edward Smith, who married Emma Smallman 26/June/ 1807 , Munslow, Shrops.
My other Pountney's have another link with  (?other)Smallman. Have you tried the Shropshire family history society? they could be very helpful? He also left a will, probate granted5/Feb/1884, proved at Shrewsbury.....
A miscellaneous mention in my notes says there was a vicar at Quatford, Shrops, in 1901 called Pountney Smith. Good luck, Surguy
