Help with name of marriage witness please - Chesshyre
« on: Tuesday 29 November 11 12:17 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone make out the name here please?
Witness to marriage of James Adshead and Mary Owen, Manchester Cathedral 1834. I think the surname is Chesshyre but can't decide on first name and can't see anything likely on the 1841 census  ???

Thanks,
 :) Barbara

Agree with sargie,he appears to use two different forms of the letter S,he does it again in Chesshyre

Yes I can see Miss there. Thank you!
Do you think it's just Miss Chesshyre or is there an initial capital as well, maybe Miss L or S Chesshyre?

In 1861 she is listed as Chesshyre and a lady's maid in Maidstone to Louisa Cornwallis, daughter of a Marquis and some other Cornwallis, daughter of an Earl.

Hi Carol, only Chesshyre's I can find in Manchester 1841 all belong to one household,no Moses.Of course if the marriage was 1834 (then it can't have been Mary) there could have been some died in the  years between then and the 1841 census.

Thanks Carol  :)

Certainly could be Moses if you disregard the dot over the second letter.

Like Seoras I can't find any Moses Chesshyres or Cheshires anywhere - doesn't mean there wasn't one, of course.
There are two elderly Chesshyres in Salford (in 1841 census), Mary and Elizabeth - possibly a 70 year old spinster would sign herself 'Miss'?

It might have to remain as a question mark for now!

Thank you all for your time
