I haven't found a death as yet, but I suppose that as he was a mariner, he could well get 'lost at sea' anywhere!

Did you notice that on Catherine's marriage cert to James, Thomas Butler was one of the witnesses - perhaps he is on the 1841 census, which might give a clue to his origins.

Good one Barbara!

I think I have William's death back in the workhouse at St Marylebone.
Died 6th Sept 1868, on Albert ward.  Admitted to workhouse July 6 '68.  Buried 10th Sept 1868
Not sure this can be the right one.
Admitted to the Northumberland Street Workhouse, July 6th 1868, Age 17, a Labourer, CofE, from 24 Earl St. E, to Albert ward, Died 6th Sept.
On the face of it, 17 in 1868, means born 1851, so not the parent of Harriett (1856) or John (1860) then. Maybe an older brother. Certainly means two William Boxalls floating around.

Ooooh!  I'll have another look at the death index, because I read his age as 47!

I despair ... I've looked on London, England, Marriages and Banns to find the marriage of William to Catherine and even with the information you've given me, i.e. the date, it doesn't come up.  What am I doing wrong?

You are not doing anything wrong!  William's surname has been mangled in the translation; search instead for Catherine Hardyman and you should find it!

My Apologies SM, I've taken a closer look at this and it is 47 - the horizontal and diagonal stroke of the four is quite faint and blends in with the background "noise", and I missed it before. So it may still be him born 1821.

By the way - there is mention of a Thomas BUtler, police constable giving evidence in an Old Bailey trial in 1839 - perhaps he is yours............
