I have got a bit further with my research and to put everyone in the picture.
Williams father was William Upham who married Lydia Court. The amazing thing is that Linda L a'Court married Frederick Stainer in 1913. Then in 1919 she married again under the name of Lydia Court. Her death certificate says Linda Lavinia Upham, so by then she was telling the truth. I can not find a divorce from Frederick.  Her first child is registered twice as Stainer and Upham, perhaps they changed it to Upham.   William also lied about his age on the certificate saying that he was ten years younger. His father is Robert Upham a traction engine driver. In the 1911 census Robert Upham is a traction engine driver, so I know that I have the correct Robert and William just different dates.
Also Linda(Lydia) gives her father a James Court, carter on farm and witness Anna Court. These are the same parents in the census records for Linda Lavinia.
I have now sent for the birth certificate of William Victor to see what name she has down.
I will keep everyone posted.
Curious dont you think?

All very confusing, but glad you've found some of the facts.

Did Frederick go off to war and get killed?

Her first child is registered twice as Stainer and Upham, perhaps they changed it to Upham.

I actual fact she had two sons with the surname Stainer and mothers maiden name Acourt before the child who was registered with both surnames.

Of course mum was legally Stainer,so that's what the birth had to be registered as,but Mr Upham was probably the father so he was allowed too add his name to the cert too.
It happens like that today too  ;D

I am looking for the parents of William Victor George Upham. He was born in Somerset on 23 April 1925 and died in 1992. It says says his mother was Acourt. I have found a marriage in 1919 of a William Upham to Lydia Court, perhaps this is them.
I have looked in census records for the Frome area of Somerset for a William or a Lydia but nothing.
Any help appreciated.#Thanks

As I mentioned in my last post I am the granddaughter of William Victor George Upham and I have his original birth certificate and marriage certificate. On these it says the names of his parents and their occupations. I am happy to pass them onto you but I would like to know who you are first.
