I'm not having much luck locating the placename you gave 'Kilnamarry, Ballintocher, Leitrim. No sign of it on the townland database and the only references on a Google search seem to be previous queries by someone looking for Michael Kelly - were these your posts ?

One of these suggested that the actual townland name might be 'Killanummery'. Might be worth following that up....

With such a common name it's going to be difficult to prove any connections. Do you have any details of his father maybe from a marriage record ?

p.s. can you confirm the denomination of your Kelly family

Dear Shane,
Thanks for your reply - yes the other queries on the internet are mine.

Here is what someone told me:
"Earliest Catholic church records for Killanummery begin in 1828 - earliest Michael Kelly birth that the Leitrim Heritage Centre has is 1829 - could be yours, or it might be someone different."

I have no further clues to his parents as I can't find his marriage certificate - he enlisted in Glasgow in 1847 - someone suggested that he might have married there or maybe in India. I employed a researcher to look for an Indian marriage but they couldn't find one.

Looks like he could have had some land:
"Estate 167R 1a. 0p. - ref. European Soldiers (Bombay) L/MIL/12/111." not sure how I go about getting more information about this.

....

I can confirm that the dates of the historic baptism records for the RC parish of Killenummery held by the National Library also start in 1828, the marriages in 1827.

The problem is the very common name, and the estimated year of birth being before the start date for the baptisms in the parish. Without some additional clues I dont see any way to confirm or rule out any baptism. Kelly was the 2nd most common surname in Ireland, and obviously Michael is a common Christian name. The possibilities of there being more than one Michael Kelly born in the area around the right time is quite high..
