James CHARLES born 7 Oct 1737 Elgin Moray m. Jean MARSHALL
« on: Friday 02 December 11 16:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am looking for the death of James CHARLES who was born in Elgin, Moray and also his marriage to Jean / Jane MARSHALL (born 1727)

His wife and daughters: Barbara & Susan move to Carlisle, Cumberland where Jean/Jane dies on 29 Oct 1818.

Why did they move down to England?

Thanks,
Moorhouse (WRY) Livermore (Cambs) Castle (Kent) Baskeyfield (Staffs) McKenzie (Moray & Cumberland)

Have you looked them up in the free on-line Libindx site which allows you to search for Moray folk?

Graham.

Yes I have Graham. In fact I have been to the Record Office in Elgin but couldn't find the marriage or his death.

It may be that the records do not survive or were never made in the first place. Any sign of a will in the English records? Work is the most likely reason for a move. Do you have any idea of his occupation? Also have you checked the on-line catalogue of the National Archives of Scotland and the catalogue for the National Register of Archives for Scotland (which is a separate thing accessed on the same site)?

Graham.

Graham,

Thanks for your reply.

I am going through the archives that you suggested. It is difficult with a surname like CHARLES which is usually a first name!
