Help please - Poppleton - Death Certificate Arrived
« on: Friday 02 December 11 19:52 GMT (UK) »
I have asked before on part of this family and wondered if I could get more help. We cannot seem to get anywhere with the Poppleton side. What we have is

My friends Grandfather was William Henry Poppleton b.1 May 1879 Hoyland, his mother according to his birth certificate was Mary Ann Poppleton, a domestic servent. There is no father on the certificate but we have established that hgis father was William Gillott.

We cannot seem to find Mary Ann other than a death that could possibly be her and will recieve the certificate next Friday when my friend picks it up.

We are assuming Mary was born in Yorkshire and think it would be the Barnsley area but of course we have nothing to confirm this.

Any help on the Poppleton's would be very much appreciated, we have gone back a long way on the Gillott side.

Is this the death - I wonder if Mary Ann died shortly after giving birth, especially as William is with his grandparents in 1881 and 1891.

The same family appear in 1871, but he is given as a fishmonger and Mary Ann is down as Mary Jane. I cant see them in 1881 yet to check if Mary is still with them.

Thank you. If we have got it right she will not be on 1881 as she died not long after having William in 1879.

Can I ask where are you getting the census from as on Ancestry both 1861 and 1871 have her as Mary Jane and I have looked on the originals and it is Mary Jane.

I wonder if Thomas and Betsy (Elizabeth) died as I cant see them in 1881, but their youngest daughter Alice born 1879 is with her aunt and uncle Joseph and Sarah Beevers

 1, Silver St, Barnsley

Piece:4603   Folio:89   Page:54

from FindMyPast.  I think the best thing is to wait for the death certificate and hope it was registered by one of her parents.

I've just looked at the original in 1861 and I think you are right and it does say Mary Jane, so perhaps it isn't the right family.
