HOLMES look up request

Hello

I have and Edward Albert Holmes / Mary Eliza Sawyer marriage certificate here for 14th Dec 1912, Newbury.  Edwards age is 49years and he is a widdower.  His address is Lambourn Woodlands Lambourn.  The interesting thing is that there is no fathers name or profession on the certificate.  Could anyone have any information to help me continue back along this line.

Yes it was according to the marriage certificate.

OK Louise then he was married to a Jane in 1901 who died in 1903 aged 40 in Hungerford 2c 159 he was born in 1861 Froxfield Berks 1901 Census Ref RG13/1125/196/9

In 1871 he is 10 years old living with his Grandparents Henry and Maria Holmes, Henry is a Master Bricklayer Census Ref RG10/1255/6/3

He was born Dec 1860, so to look for him in 1861.

It looks like he "modified" his age for the marriage!

Thanks for that.  I did already have this one from Froxfield but thought he had died in 1903 which threw me.  I'll take another look.

Hi

Thanks for that, have found her on the 1861 census.  If Edward was given the surname Holmes does it mean that he was illegitimate?  Assuming of course that his mother was indeed Ann.

So ? is where is Maria or when did Henry marry? Also who is Elizabeth, who also could be the mother of Edward!

The plot thickens.  I can see a Thomas Douglas & his family living next door to the Holmes on the 1861 census, sadler from Carmarthenshire, so presumably related (brother?although appears to be same age as Charles) to Charles maybe. 

There's also a Mary Holmes/Homes living the other side with grandson & granddaughter William & Eliza Dixon aged  30 & 24.

I wonder if this anything to do with The Crimean War.  I have seen other cases where the grandchildren are living with grandparents and the mothers are live in servants, presumably because of war casualties.
