wow, thank you so much for your replies. I now know the reason for cross referencing. I really want to be accurate in my journey through history and all info is really very much appreciated.

Hi Pauline.  Am I right in assuming you have sorted out John Roberts and Fanny Rowe Harry?  I suspect you have realised that their daughter Ellen Roberts b1859 was not your ggg grandmother.  I have info on this family if you want to get in touch.
Regards
Colin

Hi Colin - As you can imagine common surnames are not easily traceable. While I did a lot of work on John Roberts and Fanny Rowe (Harry) and have retained their information, I believe I was misled. After obtaining certificates John and Fanny are not related to the family I am researching. Ellen Roberts my g grandmother (could have been living with/married to an Orlando Winnie) but I never received a reply back from trying to confirm this...However Ellen eventually took the name Smith (the man she was living with) and eventually married him about 2 years before she died. I have had a problem trying to track Ellen's parents after they emigrated to Australia and when/if they ever came to New Zealand as Ellen and her twin brothers did at a relatively early age 13/15.

Hi Pauline
Thanks for your reply.  Yes, I sort of gathered that you might be on the wrong track as "my" Ellen died aged 7 months.   Happy hunting.  Regards. Colin
