Cook & Flynn family, Wigtownshire
« on: Tuesday 10 May 05 10:38 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the Cook and Flynn family from Wigtownshire. My grandmother, Ellen Cook (married name McQueen) was the daughter of Matthew Cook and Sarah Cook (maiden name Flynn). They were  from Wigtownshire, but apparently they didn't know one another until they both moved to Glasgow in the 1800's (sorry, don't have an exact date) and coincidentally they were both Bespoke Tailors. They settled in Glasgow and started up a business, (in the East End of Glasgow, I think) and went on to have a family and I don't think they ever returned to Stranraer. I'm guessing that we must still have relatives in Stranraer who may not know that this extended family exists. I'd be grateful for any information that anyone can offer. Thanks.

Sorry probably not able to help very much as I have no information that might cover that period. Have you tried Scotlands people website (it's a pay per view site but very cheap) you should be able to find Matthew & Sarahs marriage & they have the scottish 1901 census.
Did find the following on D&G libraries 1851 census site:-
Main Street,Kirkcowan
John Flynn-head-53-Dyer-Co.Down,Ireland
Helen Flynn-wife-48-wife of dyer-Kirkcowan
Helen Flynn-Dau-Dressmaker-Kirkcowan
John Flynn-son-30-weaver-Kirkcowan
Robert Flynn-son-8-scholar-kirkcowan
Samuel Flynn-Grandson-11 months-Kirkcowan

Also Main Street,Kirkcowan
William Flynn- nephew of John McKin (ley?)
age 15- tailors apprentice-kirkcowan

You never know you might be able to tie it in later- sorry Cooks more difficult as there's hundreds of em!

Sorry can't help more & all the best.

Thank you so much! I've just checked and these are definitely my relatives! I might be able to trace them or their children now. Did you get all of this from the census?

The Adams are cousins on my mums side. I think Tommy Adams lives in East Kilbride, and there is also a Brian Adams who lives in Canada. I know there are alot more of them, I just don't know where.
