British Home Children
« on: Monday 05 December 11 21:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi.
My Great grans sister Emily Butler married George Warne in 1873 Chelsea,London. They possibly had 4 children.
Alice born 1874 Chelsea, George 1877 Chelsea, Robert 1879 Chelsea & Edward James 1881 he was in ''Chelsea Workhouse" Arthur Street
London, Middlesex, England on the 1881 census & later died to being neglected, his parents were both up at the Old Bailey on Manslaughter Charges but were both found not guilty.  1887 Robert & Alice were both sent to Canada as part of the Home Children....I have found their files on
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca  They were sent by Authority of Boards of Guardians.
I have the reference details for Alice & Robert entering Canada but is there anyone that can either advise me how i can obtain the documents via internet or can anyone please assist me in sending me the information?
Thanks in advance,
Kaz

Hi,

It seems that they ended up in the Middlemore Homes.

http://www.bifhsgo.ca/cstm_homeChildren.php?sortCol=sna&srch=warne

There is a lot of information on this site that can help you.

The ship information on this list is a bit off - I searched the Library and Archives Canada site for that ship in 1888, and there wasn't one!!

If you have all the entry information (ship, date etc), please let us know and we can get the passenger list for you.  If you would like to search for it yourself, you can do that here:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0i2f/

I found a record for an Alice Warne, born in Chelsea England (year a bit off) marrying a George Roberts in Middlesex County, Ontario.  (records are listed alphabetically by husbands surname).  This might ber her.

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~maryc/msex99.htm

There is a thread on Rootschat that has lots of resources for researching British Home Children.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,355348.0.html

I hope this gets you started... :)

Hmm,  I am not sure if the Alice Warne who married George Roberts is your Alice...

The marriage record says George is 20 and Alice is 21.  There is a birth record for a daughter named Vera Alma Roberts in 1899 to this couple.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FM4H-WFS

The 1901 census shows Vera aged 1 with parents George, 19 and Alice 18!!

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0i2g/

Alice's age is way off.  However, she could have been a bit "creative" when she stated her age??  You can see the actual image by clicking on Split View at the top of the screen.  Alice says she was born in England and came to Canada in 1886.  This fits with your information.

So, I am not entirely sure that this is your Alice, but maiden name Warne, birthplace Chelsea England, and arrival in Canada in 1886 does.   It is something to consider at least....

I found George and Alice Roberts and their children in Lisgar, Manitoba on the 1911 census (http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=45818 - last family on page 17) and in Duval, Saskatchewan on the 1916 census for Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Also in Lisgar on the 1911 census are Robert and Clara Warne and their children (http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=45818 - first family listed on page 18). Robert, Clara and family are also in Duval on the 1916 census.

There is a 1905 marriage for a Robert Warne to Clara Lewis in Middlesex County, Ontario that has a Mrs. Geo. Roberts listed as a witness however Robert lists his parents as Robert Warne and Alice Flynn(?) and says he was born in London, England. It is certainly possible he lied on the marriage registration because he didn't know the names of his parents or where he was born. Personally I've come across many marriage registrations that have wrong information for parents because the information either wasn't known or the person was hiding being illegitimate so I wouldn't rule this one out yet.

It appears Robert, Clara and family returned to Ontario. Robert and Clara are both listed as being buried at Mt Pleasant Cemetery in London, Ontario. Also, a couple of their daughters married in Ontario.

I found a picture of the grave marker for Robert and Clara Warne with one of their daughters also listed on it:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0i2q/

Here's a link to the search results for the name Warne for burials in Ontario:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0i2r/
It says there are 979 results but when you click on any of the links for pages 2 on of the results it changes to say there are 18 results only. Most of the results are for Mount Pleasant Cemetery and I did see some listings for the other children of Robert and Clara included.

If you contact the BIFHS through the link given by RunKitty above (also posted here) they may be able to advise you about how to get the records. See 'contact us' at the lower left.

Warne, Alice and Robert BHC
« Reply #5 on: Tuesday 06 December 11 18:16 GMT (UK) »
I think the poster is only wanting shipping records right now, as BHC records are only available to direct descendants and even then they are sometimes sketchy.
However Kazig, we will likely find all we can on the little ones as we usually do that for BHC...and for others looking in. Speaking of which, you should modify first query subject line to also read surname "Warne"
Kazig, how did you find Alice was connected to this family, as I can't see her in 1881
I do see Emily with baby Edward James and then George elsewhere all in the main workhouse...then found Robert in the infirmary...but do not see Alice?  http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Chelsea/ChelseaInfirmary1881.shtml   Am just asking if you actually picked up the 1875 Q. reg. birth, as she may also be a cousin... Also have they been eliminated from later census from having stayed in England as the children have been known to make up names, but the fact that he names his mother as Alice could mean your children aren't these 2? I don't see any Warne/Flynne marriages though...

Have found an entry written by descendants who are just as confused... :)
http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=101&p=surnames.warne
contact email on this one... http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/flynn/nameregistryAtoL.htm

What were the names of the children who arrived in 1887/1888 as I cannot find them. As you'd said you located their immigration information, could you point to this as a url or full surname spelling so that we have all the information for these 2 in Canada?
The descendants absolutely need to pick up the birth cert for Alice in order to get their bearings.......
ah, seems to have claimed same family as yours in this reply... http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/WARNE/2005-02/1109539473

Cannot find either of them in 1891...I imagine Alice would have been indentured to a family...
and Robert should have been schooled in an institution. thought they may have been in Guthrie's In London...but not sure...
Found the Old Bailey acquital...sad...do you know what happened to George?

I had the same problem until I realized I had searched the wrong section of the Home Children database. Robert and Alice Warne aren't listed in the Immigration Records section but they are in the Board of Guardians section. Here's a link to the entry at the LAC website:

1891 census for city of London, Middlesex, Ontario
Robert and Alice Warren with son Robert and other members of the family.  Perhaps the Robert of the marriage record Jacquie found.  The family is also in London on the 1901 census.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0i3w/
Another possibility in 1891 is this Robert Warren(? ) living with Thomas and Martha Ennis and their young son William.  Robert b. 1879 England and classed as a lodger.
