There is much information on the Irish Workhouses on-line and off but I cannot see any reference to A.S. that may help you

Without seeing how exactly it was written I would hazard a guess at Asylum; as the workhouses were often split into a place for the poor & needy, separate to the sick, separate to an asylum for others.

When did William die? This may help.

The North Union covered a large area of Dublin: Spilt into the electoral areas of North City, Howth, Blanchardstown, Castleknock, Clontarf, Coolock, Drumcondra, Finglas, and Glasnevin from 1839 until it was amalgamated with the South Union in 1918. The National Archives have further Workhouse records.

Thanks for that. William died in 1900. Sadly I fear that you are right about A.S. = Asylum. It would account for why a seemingly stable, devoted,  hard working man was so suddenly seperated from his family.

Do you have a death cert for William ?

Sometimes the name and address of the informant can help.. e.g. might be found on the census, or a directory listing.

based on his age on the Glasnevin record I'd say this is the Index entry ...

  Name: William Fitzgerald
  Registration district: Dublin North
  Event type: Deaths
  Quarter and year: Oct-Dec 1900
Age: 50    (est. year of birth 1850)
  Volume : 2 / Page : 394

Thanks Shane. I have had my eye on the same William Fitzgerald and am waiting for news from the Dublin registry. The dates for this William fit etc but I have slight concerns that his wife and a son are buried in a different part of the cemetery. There could be quite a few reasons for this I realise.

The death certificate could give valuable information and bear in mind that people were admitted to the workhouse asylum for various reasons where a doctor considered the patient of diminished capacity, this could come from a head injury, stroke, or other illness or disease right through to what we recognise as mental illness today

were TB patients treated there? Maybe Auxiliary Sanatorium or something like it?

A kind member checked out the record for this William. His address was given as the "Model lodging House"? and he was only in there for 18 days so I guess it could have been a sudden illness.
