1861 Census in Langholm
« on: Tuesday 10 May 05 14:15 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Was wondering if someone would be so kind as to do a look up on the 1861 census for Langholm please.

Andrew SANDERS age 50 Tailor/Draper born Wamphray

On the 1851 census he was 39yrs old & living at John Street, Langholm with his wife Jane & family and on the 1871 census he was 60 yrs old, a widower - still living at Langholm and on the 1881 census he was 70yrs old and occupation listed as being a draper.

I only discovered this ancestor by accident, when I was looking through some death certs & would like more information if possible.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Diane ;D

Hi Dinarina,

Well it's been 2 years nearly but we don't let posts rest.

Have you got further with this request?

In 1861 Andrew is living in Langholm with Jane and a load of kids.

Let me know if you still require the details and I'll transcribe.

All the best,
Pam

Pam,
I would love a copy of the details of the 1861 census. I didn't get any details before and I know that the census is now on scotlandspeople but I haven't got round to it yet. Been too busy looking at other branches.
Many thanks
Diane

Both Andrew and his wife Jane - and other members of the family - are buried in the Wauchope Churchyard at Langholm.   A memorial  provides Jane's 'maiden' name as Little.

I have a transcription of the 1841 Census for Eskdalemuir which shows her at Craighaugh with three children:-Thomas (4) Elizabeth (1) and another Thomas (15).   The children's names are all Sa(u)nders.  But Jane is recorded as Jane Little.  No Andrew present on census night.
Jane had given her occupation as Tailor's wife but this was subsequently struck through.  The older Thomas was a Tailor's apprentice.  All four were born in Dumfrieshire.

Regards
Reiver

Many thanks to Pam for doing the lookup for me. Very much appreciated. And Reiver, thanks for the 1841 census info. I have found Andrew living at Wamphray on the night of the census - so either he was working away from home or was travelling on business and stopped off on the way home. Who knows, but thanks for your help guys.
