1607 Flood Displacement
« on: Saturday 10 December 11 23:05 GMT (UK) »
In 1607 the Severn Estuary was flooded (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Channel_floods,_1607). In the short term people would obviously have moved a bit inland/uphill, but would it also have resulted in the permanent movement of people, perhaps due to ruined farmland, etc?

Personally I doubt it. However records around this time are particularly absent, for instance if trying to ascertain the impact on coastal trade by looking at the Gloucester Port books you'll find nothing from 1606 until 1612.

I guess the more god-fearing/supersticious people may have looked upon the flood as punishment from above, and decided living next to the Severn was asking for trouble, and so fled. Perhaps it would have taken a few years of calm before many dared to move back?
