Hi Jackie - now it's gone a bit quiet after Christmas, there is time to catch up on some delving!

By 1911, that John had moved to 27 Bond St Northam. Harriet and Annie are still with him and another son Sidney born 1905. He is recorded as a Widower, married 20 years having had 10 children - 7 of whom are still alive. Mary is possibly the one who died 1st qr 1909 South Stoneham aged 44 but I would have expected "Southampton" rather than "South Stoneham". Florence is not with them and hence may be the one at the Princess Louise Home for Girls at Kingston Surrey.

However, on the 1901 census, there is another Florence Cox in Southampton of the same age also daughter of a John and Mary Cox but with siblings Walter,Sue and Maud ( by 1911 that Mary has also died and Reg, William and Nellie have come along)

You sound pretty sure but before going further with either line, could you confirm that Florence's siblings you mention are from "Family Memory" rather than an initial look at the 1901 census - I don't want to mislead you by chasing the wrong family !

Regards Derek

 :D ;D :o :'(
hello derek, thankyou so much for your reply. i hope your christmas was good.
florence mary cox 1898-1976 southampton was my husbands nan. the dates are correct.
annie cox 1894- ( do not know when she died) is florence's sister. annie died at durley, hants.
florence and annie had a sister harriet, we were told she was born1893 southampton. i have been told by word of mouth that there was a brother john born 1900 southampton, but not sure about this.
my husbands nan florence was very secretive about the family, it's only now that we are finding out there was more of them. it makes you think what was going on. nobody ever came to visit florence.
i would be very greatfull if you could help me find who her family were. thankyou.
best wishes jackie.

Hi Jackie - cooked a 12lb turkey for 8 on Christmas Day so pretty busy!

Looks as if Gran Florence married three times - dob 18 mar 1898 from death registration so she was the three year old one on 1901 census. Not so easy to come forward with relatives - especially if some are still living, but going back is easier.

Father John Cox was probably born 1849 at Eartham Sussex registered 2nd qr Westhampnett 7/535
to William and Charlotte Cox. You may find Eartham transcribed as Eastham or even Aruthum ! Charlotte's age looks "wrong" for a conventional marriage so William may be a second husband

1851 census - Westhampnett Sussex
William Cox    29
Charlotte Cox    37
William Cox    8
Henry Cox    4
John Cox            2

Still at home with parents 1861 and 1871 - but working as a Merchant Seaman. It could be him on the ship Vanessa in 1881 but by 1891 he is living with Mary Thorn in Southampton, working as a bargeman - presumably in the docks. They married 2nd qr 1892 Southampton 2c/39.

1901 census as per message 2

Derek

If you are sure Annie died at Durley, there is an Annie E Cox marrying Ernest V Luck at Southampton Dec 1914 and an Annie E Luck death registered Droxford (which covers Durley) 4th qr 1956 age 63. Also Ernest V Luck died 2nd qr 1967 Droxford and son Ernest died a few months old in 1916. Could be one or two more children but there is another Luck/Cox marriage which complicates matters.

Regarding Harriet - looks from BMD that she may have married Dennis Conway at southampton 4th qr 1911. They had three children between 1913 and 1920 who may still be alive.

Then it looks as if Dennis died in 1923 and she remarried James Whitcombe in 4th qr 1925. There are four children between 1926 and 1933 born Southampton district with the surname Whitcombe and "mother's maiden name" of Cox - even though there are no Whitcombe/Cox marriages - hence there are probably more living relatives!

A Harriet Whitcombe died Droxford 4th qr 1964 aged 72 and there is a possible death of James in 1980.

All of this is pure guesswork without BMD certificates or parish records showing parents names.
