Arrivals/Immigration 1947-1948: PATTINSON
« on: Tuesday 13 December 11 11:07 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,

I would be very grateful if anyone can tell me whether it is possible to find trace of immigration or ship arrivals for the period 1947 - 1948.

I am trying to trace the arrival of Captain (retired Master mariner) and Lillian Maud PATTINSON who would have arrived, probably in Durban but not 100% sure, in September/October 1947 via Mombasa.

I know for a fact that they left the UK on 7th September 1947 for Mombasa, and came to live in Durban at Willern Court,
The Esplanade, Victoria Embankment (as it was then known) up until 1950/1951.

I have had a go at entering enquiries in the various archive boxes, without success. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would very much appreciate it.

Many thanks,

Nick

Good evening Trevor,

Many thanks for getting back to me.

We are talking about Captain Frank PATTINSON and his wife, Lillian Maud PATTINSON. Captain PATTINSON was a retired Master Mariner (he retired from the sea in November 1946) who sailed with the British India S.N.Co.

I have established as a fact that the couple left the UK (London) on the S.S. KAMPALA bound for Mombasa on the 13th September 1947 - not the 7th as in my first post.

I know they lived at the address in Durban I cited. Mrs PATTINSON died in Durban in 1950 as I have documents from the Pietmaritzburg archives. Captain PATTINSON then moved down to Port Alfred in Cape Province at some stage, where he died in 1955.

What I am anxious to trace is their arrival in South Africa - I am presuming Durban - but they could have landed perhaps in Cape Town, I'm not sure.

The documents available on the archives site don't appear to cover the period 1947 & 1948, which is why I'm interested in knowing whether it will be possible to discover this information.

Regards,

Nick

Good evening Trevor,

Your input much appreciated. They could have been on the KAMPALA's maiden voyage if she was only completed in August of that same year in the UK.

Many thanks for your time.

Good evening Trevor,

Many thanks for that link - it looks very interesting for someone who has had several merchant navy officers in the family !

Much appreciated,

Nick
