Burrows and Barry families in St Helens & Rochdale
« on: Wednesday 14 December 11 20:53 GMT (UK) »
My Grandfather married twice firstly to Mary Barry from Rochdale at Rochdale Weslyan chapel in 1895, unfortunately Mary died 1913.
He then married Hannah Burrows of St Helens, marriage was held in Methodist Chuch, Douglas, I.O.M in 1914.
I would like to find out more of the two families, I have some of the names but cannot sort into any proper order.
Any information would be very much appreciated

Vanston / Portlaoise Ireland
Walters  / Bedfordshire
Baker / Bedfordshire
Maurice / Portlaoise Ireland
Burrows / Lancashire
Barry / Lancashire
Allen / Bedfordshire

Hello Richiev,

you don't give your grandfather's name and at the moment I can't see a marriage for Mary Barry in Rochdale at that time.

What are you looking for ? Is it information re the Barry and Burrows families?
Do you have any information from censuses, marriage certificates etc?

regards
heywood

I have found the marriage now- it was 1894 not 1895. :)

Do you have them in 1901and 1911?

Hi Heywood
Grandfathers name James Maurice Vanston originally from Maryborough, Queen's county Ireland I think he was studying engineering in the Lancashire area.

Am looking for any info on the Barry & Burrows families

I know there are links with other families in the area - such as Foster, Liptrot, Peace and Crabtree (of electrical fame) it's also these links I would like to pursue.

Regards
Richiev

You need to post what you already know and what exactly you are looking for. For example, you have named some other families- what are the connections?

You will find registration indexes here which may help.

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

1911 census indexes can be searched here: http://www.1911census.co.uk/
and Family Search site has useful records.

I can't see James and Mary in 1901 but can see him in Castleton (Rochdale) in 1891 and there is a Mary Barry aged 19yrs with parents Peter and Jane and siblings also in Castleton.

Do you have the marriage certificates - you will get the fathers' names from those. If you know that this is your Mary you can have further details.

As far as Hannah is concerned, it is difficult to search for her without further details. Was it her first marriage? When was she born?

James and Mary are in Maryborough in 1901 and 1911 which accounts for their absence in English census.

They have their niece Marion Barry with them in 1911. She is the daughter of William and Clara Barry, I think. If so, he is the son of Peter and Jane Barry so it does seem to be Mary's family.
