Once again, thanks for the replies and support.

I have Henry in the 1841 census living in the Boat House, Howick aged 3.  Living with
parents James and Margaret.

1851 living in Ellingham, aged 13, with parents James ande Margaret.

1861, aged 23, living as a lodger in Widdington, occupation turf cutter.

1862 - married Margaret Elliott.  First child Margaret born in 1863 address given
as Thorneyford.

1871. Henry moved to Gateshead, County Durham. James and Margaret moved to Gosforth.

On the dubious marriage certificate, the marriage took place in the Parish Church of Ponteland. Henry's address is given as Thorney Ford (which fits in).  But father's name
Richard Summers, occupation Husbandman, comes completely out of the blue.

He gives his age as 23 on the 1861 census.  The age on the marriage certificate
is also 23 in April 1862.

 TyneLiz,

The Henry Smith who you say moved to Gateshead in 1871. What occupation was recorded for him. What birth place in Northumberland is recorded for him on C1871 ?

You mention that "your" Henry born c1838, born Howick, was in Ellingham on C1851, in Widdrington on C1861 as a turf cutter.

Have you eliminated the 33 yr old Henry Smith, a gamekeeper, on 1871 (5178-6-5) living in familiar territory of Ellingham ?

I have Henry born in 1839 Howick, Northumberland, as the son of James Smith C1810
Howick.

What about this birth entry

Name:    Henry Smith
Date of Registration:    Oct-Nov-Dec 1843
Registration district:    Castle Ward
Inferred County:    Northumberland
Volume:    25
Page:    248

I think it may be the case of you working backwards from whome you definately know to be your direct ancestor, getting the marriage and birth certificates as you go, unless you have done this already.
