Poplar Register Office

I'm trying to locate Poplar Register Office. My grandfather married there in 1939 but it no longer seems to exist. Is Tower Hamlets Office the same building?

Hi

Tower Hamlets registration district has a handy tree of all the former registration districts it now covers, their various names and when they existed.

http://www.thbmd.co.uk/history.php

Since there was a registration district in  Poplar from 1837-1983 it may have been housed in various different buildings over what is nearly a 130 year period.

Valda

Hi Valda
Sorry but I'm new to this site, so I hope I'm doing things correctly. The link you gave regarding Tower Hamlets Registrars, http://www.thbmd.co.uk/history.php, doesn't seem to open for me. It says 'This site can't be reached'. However, I would like to get access to this as after WW2, my father on his return from North Africa, was appointed as a Registrar for Births, Deaths and Marriages and worked in Poplar Town Hall with David Hurst and ? Fox, for quite a number of years. A few years before he retired in about 1978, the office was moved to Philpott Street in Shadwell. Your help would be appreciated.
