Mary DRONEY Lissdoonvarna
« on: Wednesday 21 December 11 10:03 GMT (UK) »
My paternal grandmother Mary DRONEY is the person I am seeking some information. With her I have gone backwards from my generation and then to my fathers generation. I purchased her death certificate. She died in 1944,have death/funeral notices from SMH. Name and occupation of father Martin DRONEY .Name and maiden surname of mother Not know on both counts Age listed as 76 in july 5th 1944. How long in colonies 2 years in Queensland and 55 years in NSW. so she came out in 1868?? need help in this. It lists her children and I have that info from 2 ROOTS helpersShe married in Erskinville sydney in 1894 aged 25 years. The figures are wrong but I think her and her husband may have been illiterate as he was know as Edward, Edmond,Edmund or Ned. The names on the birth regos are different many times
Should I get a wedding certificate and hope the information is correct?
She listed her father as Martin and the only Martin Droney I could find was a widower farmer from Aughiska-Killilagh-Lurraga in the 1901 census He was aged 56 and had children Norah 19,Patrick 17, Thomas 15. His wife may have been Eliza Devenport. I have tried to list all the info that I have so as not to double up on it but I will stand corrected if I have done wrong. I will really appreciated any help Thank you

If Mary Droney’s age at death is accurate she was born around 1868. The indexes to Irish births have 4 possible births registered around that time, all in Ennistimon. 1864 Volume 9, page 272, 1864, Volume 14, page 258, 1865 Volume 14, page 277 & 1868 Volume 9, page 301.

Lisdoonvarna is in the civil parish of Kilmoon.

Griffiths Valuation has just one Droney family listed in that parish in 1855. That’s a Patrick Droney on the townland of Knockaskeheen, which is about three quarters of a mile north of Lisdoonvarna. He was renting a house and 12 acres (plot 13 on the Griffiths map). That was just off the modern Doolin Rd.

You could also search the parish records. It’s the RC parish of Lisdoonvarna, and according to this site the baptisms start in 1854 and marriages in 1860.

I found this on ancestry

Name: Mary Droney
Born: 3 Jun 1868
Place: Roadford, Clare, Ireland
Baptism Place: Roadford, Clare, Ireland
Father's Name: Martin Droney
Mother's name: Eliza Devenport

I didn't see the Martin Droney that you mentioned on the Irish 1901 census though !

If Mary Droney was born in 1868 and died in 1944 and the documents stated that she was 57 years total in Australia that would mean that she emmigrated approx 1887 !

Hope this helps,

Tara

Thank you for all your help.
I think I will go with the MARTIN Droney as that 's what is written on grans death certificate.
How does one find out about emmigration records?
also it seems she was rather old to be unmarried as it states that she was 25 on her wedding day,so surely she would not be at home with her father. I think she would be working somewhere, maybe thats where the Lissdoonvarna comes from,as it said that nobody could read or write I think I have hit a brick wall as I have no info on her husband as well.
Thanks again for your help gmar
