Funnell family, originally from Lewes, Sussex
« on: Tuesday 27 December 11 13:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

You folks out there were so helpful with my Trimmings family I thought I would try this new family I have just found who emmigrated to Canada. I think most of them were in the British Columbia part of Canada.
The family were Isaac and Eliza Funnell and their children (all born in Lewes, Sussex)
Ernest William (b 1876)
Clement James (b 18
Ella Kate (b 1883)
Alice (b 1884)

The family emmigrated to Canada some time after the 1891 census. I have found a few deaths on the new family search website but not for all of them

I would be very interested in seeing if anyone else is researching this particular bunch of Funnells.

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year. :)

Jacqui

Hi,

1901 census, they are in Brandon Manitoba.  There is another son to add.  This says they came to Canada in 1893.

1911 census in BC:

There is another son here too.  So, you can add Albert and Isaac Cecil to your list.    Oddly, the Isaac Cecil/J. Cecil person is called male on the 1901 census and female on the 1911 census.  The birth year is 1896, so I assume this is the same person and some error was made.  The girls aren't with their parents, so perhaps they are married.

Albert seems to have joined the war effort and did not survive.
On the 1911 census underneath the parents is the married daughter Ella and her husband George Henry Donaldson.  Married 16/06/1898 in Manitoba.  Their daughter Alice Ann Eliza b. 1903 Brandon married 1921 in Vancouver to Thomas Edward McEwen.
Isaac Cecil married 30 Jan 1916 Vancouver to Eleanor Margaret Walker.  He was b. 30 Jan 1896 Brandon and d. 21 Feb 1964 Vancouver.

Hi,

Great - Isaac Cecil is certainly male then.  Mystery solved.  I can also see a marriage for Alice, daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth, to William John Brennan in BC in Vancouver on Nov 9, 1909.

Hi again,

Looks like son Clement gets recorded twice on the 1911 census.  He is with his parents (transcribed as Vincent), and shown as being married.  He is also recorded with his wife Ada and their daughter Gladys.

http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=62885

Clement's marriage to Ada Carter in Vancouver, 25 Feb 1909.

Thank you all so much.

You are all so very helpful. I didn't know about Isaac as he appears to have been born once the family crossed the pond so he didn't appear on any of the English census (or should that be cenci?).

Dragongirl are you interested in this Funnell family or did you just look up Isacc's father, Isaac? I have a fair bit of information on him. He certainly had a lot of siblings.

Thank you all again. Now I need to update my information.

You're a bit like me - completely hooked ::) This family is a very distant branch on my tree but I like to cover all of them, starting of course with my direct descendants. Trouble is, it takes ages, especially when they all had such big families :'(

Isaac senior's second wife, Ruth Bray was his cousin and she didn't last too long either. Poor chap, losing 2 wives!
