What date for Charlotte?
« on: Friday 30 December 11 20:48 GMT (UK) »
I've just been sent a email of a photo of what is probably my great-great grandmother Charlotte Rumble by a distant cousin.  It's quite a close up on the face, but can anyone give an opinion about the date it was taken and how old Charlotte is?

Is there more to the photo, Ermintrude? Has it been cropped from a larger photo or is that all there is? Without seeing the rest of the outfit and the frame it's hard to tell, but my guess would be around 1900ish. Would that fit? She might be around 40? Ish? :)

See if you can get the whole photo including the outer edges and corners if you can, that could help date this.

Cheers,
China

Thanks, China, unfortunately, that's all I got sent. I would think it has been cropped at some point so might try and see if I can get hold of a bigger picture (third hand via my contact).  The hat looks like a semi-turban style to me, not sure when these went out of fashion.  Charlotte was born in 1867 so she would have been late 30s/early 40s between 1900-10 (she'd had fourteen children, all but one lived to adulthood, by 1909, and looks remarkably well on it!)

Hello Ermy, my wife is descended from Charlotte's older brother David Rumble. I have a photograph taken in 1906 at the wedding of David's daughter and it shows various Rumbles, one of which could possibly be your Charlotte.

G'day Ermy - what a fine looking lady and 14 children - she doesn't look the least bit frazzled by them does she?

I would put her age at early fifties, there is a slight softening and droop of the cheeks and a little bit of loose flesh under the jawline.  Her hair might be greying or perhaps she was just fair haired. She appears to have very fine unmarked skin and dresses elegantly - IMO I would say 52/53

Brightened her photo for you a little as well

Cheers

Maureen

Hi gburto01, good to hear from you, haven't had very much contact with anyone from this side of the family despite the large number of children (all Jones) that Charlotte had.  I've got quite a lot of info on the Rumbles/Rumbolds/Dixeys from Cholsey in Berkshire which I'd be happy to share, when you've made three posts you will be able to send me a personal message and we can exchange email addresses if you'd be happy to do so  ;)

Thanks, Maureen, that's great, agree she looks good in spite of her hard life.  In the 1911 census she had 9 children and was taking in washing to help make ends meet, my daughter asked me how many washing machines she had to cope with that and when I said none she was speechless!  I'm 53 myself this year and look much less like a grand dame than she did!
Cheers,
Ermy

Hello Ermy

My current Rumble tree has been built from census sources but the family seem to have stayed local to Cholsey over a number of generations, based on how easy it was to trace them through the Cholsey church register. I've got a copy of a transcript of the registers from Cholsey and surrounding district so need to get busy on that.

Bye

Gary
