execution for debt - please remember that Manx law + names of officers is not the same as the UK (it not being part of UK nor of Enngland etc etc) - the Coroner (NOT equiv to English coroner) would attempt to obtain property and sell it to recover debt - could be anything from household furniture to property

Oh I see! Actually I didn't realise that there were those kind of differences in language between IOM and UK.

I have just found another article which is in the IOM Times Dec 4th 1897 and is a list of monies collected by the Douglas Branch of the RNLI and there is a Mrs Taylor of 5 Metropole Mansions listed.

The plot thickens....
Dorset; Cheshire; Kansas; Kent; Norwich
Smith; Dutton; Sawyer; Judd; Taylor; Haddock; Viney; Kemp; Edwards

Just found an article on 19th century newspapers online about Mr Stott of Metropole Mansions owing money in October 1900. It keeps talking about execution but I think they mean some method of getting the money back from him. This confirms the name though on the 1901 census....though am surprised he's still there!

'Execution' here is a bit of legal terminology - his creditors have obtained a judgment (ie the court has said that the money is owing and he has to repay it) and the execution is the means of obtaining it (eg by sending the bailiffs in)

yes - strange hasn't arrived yet tho
re Bailiffs - don't have them tho Coroner's officers do same job - also different laws as to what and how property can be distrained - if sold usually at a coroner's auction (in early terminology at 'public cant')
