Ambrose & Margaret Somers/Summers of Wexford
« on: Wednesday 11 May 05 15:47 BST (UK) »
I am trying to learn the maiden name of the MARGARET SOMERS who is buried in Old Cemetery, Bunclody, Wexford.  She died July 20, 1867 at the age of 57.  She had been married to AMBROSE SOMERS who died March 1, 1873 at age 67.

I know that my great-grandfather, DANIEL SOMERS, was the son of AMBROSE and MARGARET (COSGROVE) SOMERS of Ireland.  He came to the United States in 1865 as a young man ... and now we've lost all touch with our Irish roots.   ???

I would love to know if that MARGARET SOMERS who is buried in Old Cemetery, Bunclody ... was formerly MARGARET COSGROVE.

My deepest thanks to anyone who can help.  Thank you!   :)
Somers/Summers ... Ireland ... probably Wexford, but not yet certain.

Hello RCtodd,

Happy Easter and a belated welcome to RootsChat.

There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.
