information about tartan COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 04 January 12 02:18 GMT (UK) »
This is a photo of my grandmother, taken around 1910. She was one of two daughters of David Simpson who was born in Glasgow in 1855 and married in South Australia in 1898. I am wondering whether anyone can tell me anything about what she is wearing. Obviously her father wanted her to know her Scottish heritage.
Gilbertson (Burnley Lancs)
Maddison (Durham)
Snell (Cornwall)
Lamb (Nottinghamshire)
Simpson (Glasgow)
Topliss (Isle of Man)
Clonan (or Cloonan), Bennett (or Bent) (Westmeath Ireland)
all migrated to South Australia between 1836 and 1890s

Although tartan is today perceived as being a large part of Scottish heritage, the type of tartan shown in the picture only dates to around early 1800s when 'tartan' designs were able to be mass produced as a commercial venture.

Prior to 1800 very few people in Scotland wore 'tartan' and it was a very highland cloth that bore no resemblance to modern tartans. Having a tartan for each family surname is again a modern commercial invention

Thank you very much - my great-grandfather grew up in a Glasgow workhouse but, even so, I imagine he felt nostalgia for the land of his birth after settling so far from home.

Could she have been dressed for Highland Games or some sort of pageant? Or perhaps dressed in photographers' outfit to have picture taken in studio.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
