Hi Dee,
Just found this in TROVE - looking for Victor in 1953 after missing for 14 yrs:-

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/48267832?searchTerm=kappler&searchLimits=l-decade=195|||l-year=1953|||l-title=The+Advertiser+%28Adelaide%2C...|titleid%3A44

Maybe he's been hiding here all along?

Great find, Sashar!
Laura Hannah RICHARDS nee Selway was my great grandmother's sister, as was Victor's mother. My mother actually remembers her.

So.....Lightning Ridge and Victoria......why doesn't he appear on Electoral Rolls, I wonder? He was born in Australia, as were his parents.   :-\

If he didn't want to be found I wonder if he changed his identity?   :-\

He wouldn't be the first one in his family to do that.   :-\

His brother Frederick Berger KAPPLER did that.....joining up in WW1 under an assumed name of Fred Burgess.  (See mariac's post and link.) Fred had had a fight with his father and they didn't know he'd joined up until after he was killed. His WW1 record makes terribly sad reading.

I might have to give up on the search for his death in that case.   :-\

Oh dear!   So sad isn't it  :'(

Have someone in my family that disappeared also after Korean War, kept his last name but changed his first.   Eventually found interstate by Salvo's through receiving a pension.   Trouble was he only had a few months to live when he was found.   Good timing by his sister who kept in touch through his final days but very very sad.
He kept disappearing to out of the way places where no one would know him so I can imagine your Victor may have been doing something similar.   My man eventually settled with a lot of his Korean buddies who supported him and probably understood whatever traumas he was dealing with.

I do hope Victor turns up somewhere again, you never know.

Best of luck,
Sashar

I shall leave this thread in the hope that it is found by someone somewhere who knows of Victor and what happened to him.

Thanks for your ongoing help, Sashar.  :)
