James McKenzie Born Edinburgh

Hi all
Just discovered my GGrandfather James McKenzie was born in Edinburgh in 1855 +- 1yr. The first official record I have is from the 1901 Census of Ireland when he was living in Dublin with his Irish wife and family. Her name was Catherine Dorman. He gave his occupation as a quay labourer in Dublin. Any ideas of where I might start?

Hi Gerry. how old were his kiddies and where were they born? That may help to get an idea of when he made the move from Scotland to Ireland.

the mormons website seems to make only one mention of the couple - in their son's birth record

Hi Anabanana
You were quick off the mark!!  The only info I have on the children is from the 1901/1911 census which lists James as a widower (1911)  and living with him are John (1882), Mary (1885), James, my grandfather (1889) and Louisa (1893). The only one I heard of as a child was "aunt Louisa".  Something in the back of my mind tells me that William Thomas enlisted in the British Army and was in the second Boer War. That is probably why he was not listed in the Census.
Is there anyway of finding anything of the Edinburgh side of the family? I noticed that everything seems to be pay per view so I need to know what I'm doing before taking out the card.

I'm totally ignorant of what the content death entries in Ireland are - I assume he died there?.  Do you have a copy of James death  entry and does it record any parents?

If you check out the Mormons website at

You'll see that unfortunately there are quite a few James McKenzies born in the timeframe you mention in the Edinburgh (Midlothian), area.

Thank you for your help. Now that I know when William was born I will try to locate a marriage cert in Dublin which should give me James's parents' names. I will take it from there when I get the cert.
