Hi, Merlin I originally thought the first couple were just transcription errors by overzealous staff at BDM,but that cannot be correct.

I wonder if William could have been illiterate and or dyslexic even. there are one too many name variations aren't there.

At least they are coming to light. Good work.

(There is an interesting footnote on the list which says that "Mrs. W.O. Bourne left her husband 8 years ago and has returned since the disaster, some caution will be necessary in dealing with her" BEV

If the last child was born in 1880, (per Merlin) and she had been gone 8 years in 1887, she must have taken this infant with her when she departed.

whether the Bourne family group consists of 3 Judith  :D

Austcemindex has photos of the following headstones at Bulli cemetery

Bouren   David      13 Jan 1995   80y   husband; father; gf   MW2
Bouren   David C      16 Jul 1928   50y   son/William & Mary; h/Martha; father   Ang
Bouren   Martha      10?Sep 1952   70y   w/David C; mother

I note on the photo that David C also died at Bulli Colliery in 1928.  What a toll for that family.

This is absolutely brilliant!!
Thank you so much everyone  :)

I've found the Attaway in Lenham in 1841 (with a brother called Felix),  now I just need to work out whether he is the William Bourne found by Merlin on the 'Herefordshire' or  the son of Alfred and Mary.
However, if Alfred and Mary arrived in 1839 on the 'Strathfieldsaye', the birth record for William dated 1834 must be a different family?

Just adding the ref for the shipping for William BOURNE on the Herefordshire - Reel 2137, [4/4791] - will have a look next week.

My thoughts are that he is the one in Lenham, Kent.

1841 Census at Paden Street farm, parish of Wychling, Kent - all born in County
Brewer Rayner 45 ag lab
Maria Rayner 35
James Bourne   15
Phebe Bourne   15
Maria Bourne   12
Felix Bourne   10
Attaway Bourne   8

1851 at Woodside Green, Lenham, Kent
Brewer Rainer   54 ag lab
Maria Rainer   45
Ottaway Rainer   16 b Lenham
Susanna Rainer   12
Frances Rainer   7

It looks to me as though Brewer RAI(Y)NER is his stepfather; if you look at the children in the 1841 census I would think they are the children of Maria and all have the surname BOURNE.  By 1851 Ottaway is still at home but recorded with the surname of his stepfather and has 2 half-siblings.

The names of his siblings are used for some of his own children - Felix, Maria (also his mother's name).  He consistently lists his own forename as Ottaway (or variation!!) in registering his children.

You mention a marriage in 1720 which was the origin of the name O(A)ttaway.  This link mentions MIs at Hothfield church which have BOURNE burials (shown at 40, 41, 45, 90, 95, 145 on the list - I think Dorcas BOURNE who you mention in your first post is listed #40),

http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/MIs/MIsHothfield/01.htm

Seems to me that ordering one of the children's birth certificates should help!

Judith -

Thanks :)

I've found a lot of information about the Bournes on the site you mention.  The family originated from Hothfield and was thereabouts for many generations.

On the 1841 census in the same area are also William and Elizabeth (Coomber) Bourne who married in 1798.
They had a son called Felix in +/- 1801 who I think married Mary Hampshire in Lenham in 1823.  I've found children - James, Frances, Dorcas, Phoebe, Mary, Felix and Attaway, the family who later become Rayners.
It looks like Felix died between 1834 and 1841 and Mary Hampshire Bourne married Mr. Rayner.

Familysearch confusingly has christening records for William Bourne and Ottoway Bourne at the same church on the same date.  I wonder if there were indeed two sons christened together or if it's an error and he really was William Ottoway/Attaway Bourne (the William O. Bourne who lost his life in the Bulli mine).

I am inclined to agree that this is the William Bourne who sailed on the Herefordshire, and the family found by Neil are probably relatives.  There were a LOT of Bournes!

Many thanks to everyone for finding the elusive Bournes in NSW.
