James WILLIAMS of Llandewi 1840
« on: Saturday 07 January 12 16:07 GMT (UK) »
hi

I'm looking for the birth of JAMES WILLIAMS who gives his place of birth as Cardiganshire. In 1911 he says he was born in LLandewi.
Can anyone help me sort one WILLIAMS from another?  There are a few on freebmd registered in Cardiganshire c 1840. How can I pick the right one?
Does anyone have Williams from Llandewi in their tree?
Avril

A copy of his marriage cert will give a fathers name (hopefully) which may help narrow the search

If James was only born in 1840 - his marriage would be much later

What was his wife's name and where was she born?  When was their first child born and where as that will help narrow down a marriage date/location

If all else fails - you may need to buy a copy of one of their childrens birth certs to get his wife's maiden name

I know you are but with so many James Williams - you need to find his marriage to get his fathers name.

Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/75 so there were lots of unregistererd births prior to then - particularly in the 1840's

Llandewi came within the Aberayron registration district

James birthyear varies between censuses so you have to try some other elimination process

Between 1837 - 1843 there is only one James Williams birth registered in Aberayron but how will you know if it's the right one without his fathers name?

Births September qtr 1839
James Williams    Aberayron  27 4

In 1881 - birthyear 1843 - Cardiganshire
1891 - 1842 Cardiganshire
1901 - 1841 - transcribed as Llanderis but probably Llandewi
1911 - 1841

In 1871 his birthyear is 1840 - birthplace just Cardiganshire.  Eldest child is 10 so marriage before 1861

In 1861 his birthplace is Carmarthen Town (per image) and birthyear 1840.  Son James is 5mths so the marriage may be the 1859 one to Susannah Watkins

there's more than one Llanddewi in Cardiganshire. Llanddewi Aberarth is the one covered by Aberayron.

Llanddewi Brefi is the one more likely to be called just Llanddewi

There's a bit more info on this post

The way forward looks to be the marriage cert to be sure of father for James.
