Martha was quite right, as not only was this attestation paper from Birlington Ont, but also this fellow was born in Berkshire, England...so some dates and next of kin, etc, should be here...if this is your man...

That is Burlington, not Birlington. It's near Toronto. :-)

Be warned that the Attestation Papers online are NOT the full files! They are just one paper, front and back.

You can only get the full set of file records by applying by FAX or by SNAIL MAIL to the National Archives. This is worth getting, it's very reasonable and can have anywhere from 3 to 100 more records in it. It will usually show the ship your man was on from Canada to England, what unit he was assigned to, where he was placed (at the front, etc), any woundings, any hospitalization, any disciplinary action, and so on.

Full details on how to apply are given at The Canadian Military Heritage Project "Find Your Military Ancestor" at http://www.rootsweb.com/~canmil/

I think it would be easier to just send use the link within the actual archives site
where the attestation papers are:
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02010602_e.html

after you have found information you just hit the link
How to consult a file on-site or order a copy of the complete file

Hi All

Many thanks to everyone JJ for the gifs and ellio, one of the 2 may be the right person as College town in Berkshire is in fact next to or part of Sandhurst which is where the military college is!  I also know form some recent info that the sisters of Florence who married Edward Hunt all married at the church in College Town, so I am hoping this is the right person.  Will still keep tracking in Ontario, but my heartfelt thanks for the info from everyone :D
If I can help perhaps on some uk info let me know

Cheers

Hi Everyone again

Update  :D

Found marriage of Edward Hunt to Florence Netherclift in 1917 in Easthampstead RD ie Sandhurst.  I know he died in Canada and she came back circa 1926 and remarried in same area in 1929.  Just need to find him in the indexes at the register general in Ontario!

Thanks

Hi All, especially JJ

The 2 records you pointed me too are I think the same person.  The 1896 is now definitely the ancestor I was looking for.  Also now have his marriage in UK in 1917 and he was in the Canadian Regiment!.  ALos found his wife's second marriage in 1929 back in the UK.  Have now traced Edward Hunts parents and grandparents to 1826 so doing well in the last week or so!

Yippee!  :D :)

hi, John!

I never got your reply, for some reason the notification doesn't work sometimes.
I am so pleased to hear that you are doing so well! Amazing how little pieces help to make the puzzle come together.

best of luck to you!  J.J.

John, Are you aware that you can send for the full set of records now that you have his attestation papers?
Go back to the site listing your ancestor and you will see the link:
"How to consult a file on-site or order a copy of the complete file"
There will be other information such as medical history during the war...Many didn't make it, but those who did... came back with bad lungs and other physical problems from the gas and chemical warfare.

All the best..J.J.
