*COMPLETED* (Thank you!) Placename - Boran, Yorkshire?
« on: Saturday 07 January 12 23:05 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I have found an entry for my ancestor Thomas Hobson in the 1851 England Census that lists his place of of birth as Boran, Yorkshire.  Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any conclusive information relating to this place of Boran.  I cannot find it on Google Maps (which has so far been able to keep you with my ancestry geography surprisingly well!); regular internet searches are not providing anything truly useful; and, my mother who grew up in Yorkshire does not recall hearing of the place.

Does anyone have suggestions for other names that it may have been and were, therefore, written down incorrectly?  Or does Boran, Yorkshire mean something to anyone else?

Thank you in advance!

Tam

Hi,

Is the writing clear?  Can you give the census reference details?

Hi Nanny Jan,

I would say that in comparison to many other census records I have seen, this has to be one of the clearest.  It definitely looks like Boran to me!  The census details are:  1851 England Census > Lincolnshire > Coleby > District 3 > 7.

Hi,

Yes, it does look like Boran.   ::)  Can you find him on other census records?

I can find him on the 1841 record, but of course that doesn't list where he was born.  It just states that he was born in a county other than the one he currently resided in.  And he, not so helpfully, died before the 1861 census.   ???  I don't know if his burial or death record would shed any useful light on his birthplace.

HI,

Did he marry after civil registration began?  The certificate should show the name and occupation of his father which might yield some clues.

When they filled in the census return perhaps he said he was Boran in Yorkshire? LOL!
I tried being normal once, it was the worst 5 minutes of my life!
