I understand the quizzical (?) smileys, doesn't look very well does he? Not such a good likeness but thank you for having a go

It really would help if you rescanned at a much higher resolution.  You scanned this at a very low 96dpi and a resolution of 300 dpi would get you much better results,
Also leave out the scanner bed

I have rescanned and did increase the pixel size so not sure what has happened.
I've had another go and if this doesn't work, I will have to go back to the drawing board. Thanks for your help

Please rescan ....  select colour scan and dpi in the settings (300dpi ).  Then first select preview scan once done,  then select the area of your photo and then scan,  ... this should scan only the image and not your image and scanner bed.
